Starlite Lanes is entering the 10th frame in its current location.
The bowling alley at 1305 S. Beacon Blvd. in Grand Haven will soon be transformed into a Planet Fitness. Two new buildings will be built on the 3-acre site, which will house @Home Realty and Fit Body Boot Camp. Jake Hogeboom, founder of @Home Realty, currently located at 510 Miller Drive on Grand Haven’s north end, said the idea has been in the works for about four months. “Planet Fitness is buying the existing bowling alley,” he said. “They’ll repurpose it into a Planet Fitness gym.”
A 16,000-square-foot, two-story building on the south property line will become the new home to Fit Body Boot Camp and a similar-sized two-story building on the west side, in between Planet Fitness and Fit Body Boot Camp, will house the real estate agency.
“The current bowling alley owner is looking for some space to do a smaller bowling alley in town,” Hogeboom said. “I’m not sure if he’s identified a space. He’s taking all of the equipment and is trying to relocate it. The SpartanNash Co. considered purchasing the bowling alley a couple of years ago, with the intent to relocate its D&W food store from Robbins Road, but that deal fell through.
“The bowling alley has been for sale for a while now,” Hogeboom said. Hogeboom said the real estate company he founded five years ago has outgrown its current 8,500-square-foot space at Grand Landing. “Doubling our size will be great,” he said.
All plans are contingent upon approval from the City of Grand Haven. Hogeboom said the city’s Planning Commission is slated to review the site plan at its June meeting.
“If it all gets approved, then Planet Fitness will start the remodel of the bowling alley the first week of July,” he said. “The two brand-new buildings will take a little longer to get going. We’ll probably start construction in August or September, with probably about an eight-month build process.” The goal is to have the construction’s rough-in completed before cold and snow hit so contractors can continue with interior work during the winter.
“We’re also doing a brand-new building in Holland right now,” Hogeboom added. “From our standpoint, we’re a real estate company, but we’re also what I like to call a culture company.” The new @Home Realty space will include a two-story slide and an arcade. “We’re really just taking the whole client and agent experience to another level,” Hogeboom said. “We’re excited about it.”
Planet Fitness executives had been eyeing the Starlite Lanes space “for quite a while,” Hogeboom said, but the collaboration between the national fitness chain, the bowling alley, @Home Realty and Fit Body Boot Camp is what made the deal come together. “We’re all going to share in the parking,” Hogeboom said. “I think it’s a good mix of businesses. The building will be pretty substantial — two stories and modern looking with a lot of glass. It will be a good revitalization of that area.”
