With new office building on the horizon, life indeed is good @HomeRealty

One can’t help but notice Jake Hogeboom’s ride parked outside the offices of @HomeRealty. The neon green splash and smiley face on the hood and grill of the white Jeep Wrangler give it away. It’s only fitting that Hogeboom and his staff drive such a fun vehicle. After all, the founder of @HomeRealty is driven to have fun with everyone around him.

Hogeboom’s successful real estate company is all about making the buying and selling of a home, and life in general, an enjoyable experience for his agents as well as his clients.

“We put a huge emphasis on culture and positivity,” said Hogeboom, who started @HomeRealty when he was just 28. “A saying we like to use is ‘practice reckless optimism.’ Life is short and you have to have fun while you work, right?”

Hogeboom, whose enthusiasm is contagious, doesn’t just talk about creating a positive and fun environment. The bright new offices of @HomeRealty, scheduled to open in Grand Haven and Holland this summer, will feature a spiral slide from the second floor to the first as well as arcade games, coffee shop and a “closing” bar, where mimosas, bloody Marys and beer, and wine will be served upon successful closings.

“We’ve got our own title company in house,” Hogeboom said. “We’ll do all our closings in our office, so we like to make it a fun experience. Our new offices will really take that to the next level.”

The new buildings — one in Grand Haven and one in Holland — will be ready mid-summer, Hogeboom said. The Grand Haven office, a freestanding building located on a 3-acre parcel that was home to Starlite Lanes bowling alley at 1305 S. Beacon Blvd., will be double the size of @HomeRealty’s current location at 510 Miller Drive on the north side of Grand Haven.

“This place has been great, but it will be good to be in our own freestanding building with the ability to grow,” Hogeboom said. “We’re basically full in all of our offices right now. It’s time to think a little bigger and make a bigger impact.”

The new office building will be nearly double the size of the current one, going from 8,500 square feet to 16,000. His staff has been able to take “field trips” to check out the new location as well as the furnishings and technological enhancements. Hogeboom’s company currently has about 100 employees between the Grand Haven, Holland and Hudsonville locations.

“We grew really quick … we went from zero to being successful quickly, but it’s because of the culture and providing the services for the agents,” Hogeboom said. “We’ve got a great group and we really try to surround ourselves with positive individuals that make it fun to come into the office, where they feel comfortable bringing their clients.”

Clients and agents aren’t the only ones welcome in the office. Hogeboom has created a family-style atmosphere where even dogs have been known to hang around.

“We want people to feel comfortable coming in and having their kids play in the playroom, arcade or the slide while they do our business,” he said. “Our focus is to make our agents the most comfortable and the best that they can be so they can go out and affect more people and help more people, and not worry about the office.”

Hogeboom also takes pride in the community involvement of @HomeRealty. Employees and family participate in events in West Michigan, whether it’s Grand Haven’s Coast Guard Festival parade, Holland’s Tulip Time parade or a Habitat for Humanity build in Muskegon.

“We have some different things we’ll launch this year that will hopefully help grow that community involvement,” he said. “We’re working on a few different things. We try to entrench ourselves in the communities and help families out and do our part of giving back.”

It’s obvious when meeting Hogeboom that a comfortable laid-back culture is his aim. He prefers to dress in a casual sweat suit and tennis shoes over a suit and tie. He says “corporate” is a dirty word.

“We’re not trying to hide the fact that we like to have fun and impact people’s lives through the real estate world,” he said. “We’ve got to make money, too, but it’s more than that. It’s people over profits … if you take care of enough people, the profits will be there. That’s really what we try to focus on.

“We’re able to have the culture we do because we do sell a lot and we do work our tails off. We’re confident in our abilities to help people buy or sell a home, so it makes the back-end part a little more fun. You can have all the fun you want, but if you aren’t doing your job right it doesn’t really mean much.

“Our saying is ‘Life is Good @home.’ We truly believe that, and that’s our main focus.”

And so, another new adventure begins!

After 5 years at 510 Miller Drive, our @HomeRealty corporate operations are moving to a new space! We are insanely EXCITED for many reasons, some of which include a better location, more parking & WAY more space!!! YAY! This means we will be more comfortable & accessible to YOU!

Here is a recent article by Marie Havenga with the Grand Haven Tribune announcing the big news!

Starlite Lanes is entering the 10th frame in its current location.

The bowling alley at 1305 S. Beacon Blvd. in Grand Haven will soon be transformed into a Planet Fitness. Two new buildings will be built on the 3-acre site, which will house @Home Realty and Fit Body Boot Camp. Jake Hogeboom, founder of @Home Realty, currently located at 510 Miller Drive on Grand Haven’s north end, said the idea has been in the works for about four months. “Planet Fitness is buying the existing bowling alley,” he said. “They’ll repurpose it into a Planet Fitness gym.”

A 16,000-square-foot, two-story building on the south property line will become the new home to Fit Body Boot Camp and a similar-sized two-story building on the west side, in between Planet Fitness and Fit Body Boot Camp, will house the real estate agency.

“The current bowling alley owner is looking for some space to do a smaller bowling alley in town,” Hogeboom said. “I’m not sure if he’s identified a space. He’s taking all of the equipment and is trying to relocate it. The SpartanNash Co. considered purchasing the bowling alley a couple of years ago, with the intent to relocate its D&W food store from Robbins Road, but that deal fell through.

“The bowling alley has been for sale for a while now,” Hogeboom said. Hogeboom said the real estate company he founded five years ago has outgrown its current 8,500-square-foot space at Grand Landing. “Doubling our size will be great,” he said.

All plans are contingent upon approval from the City of Grand Haven. Hogeboom said the city’s Planning Commission is slated to review the site plan at its June meeting.

“If it all gets approved, then Planet Fitness will start the remodel of the bowling alley the first week of July,” he said. “The two brand-new buildings will take a little longer to get going. We’ll probably start construction in August or September, with probably about an eight-month build process.” The goal is to have the construction’s rough-in completed before cold and snow hit so contractors can continue with interior work during the winter.

“We’re also doing a brand-new building in Holland right now,” Hogeboom added. “From our standpoint, we’re a real estate company, but we’re also what I like to call a culture company.” The new @Home Realty space will include a two-story slide and an arcade. “We’re really just taking the whole client and agent experience to another level,” Hogeboom said. “We’re excited about it.”

Planet Fitness executives had been eyeing the Starlite Lanes space “for quite a while,” Hogeboom said, but the collaboration between the national fitness chain, the bowling alley, @Home Realty and Fit Body Boot Camp is what made the deal come together. “We’re all going to share in the parking,” Hogeboom said. “I think it’s a good mix of businesses. The building will be pretty substantial — two stories and modern looking with a lot of glass. It will be a good revitalization of that area.”

@Home Grand Haven Habitat for Humanity Build Day!

AgentImage | June 9, 2017

Our first annual At Home Realty Grand Haven Habitat for Humanity Build Day was a success! Dedicated to bringing our employees together and reminding us of how important volunteering is to our core values: We live here, we work here, we serve here, our agents & staff showed up ready to serve!

Motivated by our fearless leader constantly pushing us to do better, more than 30 @Homers from our Grand Haven office teamed up with our local Habitat for Humanity to help give a family a safe place to call home.

The build was also an unexpected opportunity to learn more about each other. Like…most of us didn’t know that agent, Jeff Grysen and CEO, Terri Redder make a great (and very focused!) landscape team…and that while Ken Vis is really good at hanging towel racks (they’re like…perfectly straight), wife Gina Kelly-Vis is the perfect size to paint overhead kitchen cabinet walls – she didn’t even have to duck! 😂

A huge thanks to to the empowerment of Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity & @HomeRealty as well as our amazing sponsors; Laurie Cordes, Kate Lachmann, Marlo Morgan & Holly Brinks from Lake Michigan Credit Union and Curtis Chambers & Joann Pugh from MMS, Member Mortgage Services; who fed, hydrated & cheered us on!

We are @ team

AgentImage | October 5, 2016

We’re continuously looking to improve @Home, and this means that having a great environment makes us more efficient. Here @Home, we think that team building is essential to help us serve our agents & clients better.

That’s why, a few weeks ago our staff spent the day at an incredible ropes course. Maneuvering through the ropes high above the treeline was an awesome team building activity because of the combination of well-devised strategies, trust among pairs and effective teamwork.

To win a soccer game, for example, the goalie and the position players all have to excel in their roles. Goalies are not expected to be good forwards, but they certainly appreciate and encourage goal scoring. Our staff is no different. We recognize and appreciate the value of each department’s individual goals, but also welcome the chance to come together to focus on a common team goal. The stronger we are internally only allows us to be stronger for our agents, clients and the communities we serve.

We are grateful for the opportunity to work together, accomplish challenging goals as a team and…of course, have a little fun 😉

@HomeRealty turns three years old…and we want to THANK YOU!

AgentImage | May 10, 2016

OMG…We’re THREE!!!

It might go without saying, but we need to say it anyways: THANK YOU. Thank you to our clients, past and present – it’s our honor to serve you and help you succeed.

Because of you, in three years, we’ve been able to help more than 3,000 people find their dream homes 🙂 That’s pretty amazing. And so are you.

We’ve built a lot of great relationships in the past three years, and we’re looking forward to strengthening them even further.
